Display a success:

Mission International, along with a number of other local, national and international charities and ministries, set up a display in the Marryatt Hall (adjoining Dundee's Caird Hall) on Easter Sunday.

Numerous visitors:

From 5pm -6pm visitors to the main event, an united Easter celebration, came to view the dispalys as well as after the main event was over. Mission International saw over 100 vistors to the display stand where copies of Kabanda's story were presented t each visitor along with other items of literature. The iterest was inspiring, people wanted to know more. Some well known firends and many new faces as well were keen to find out abolut teams and projects. We hope that many will follow up on their visit to our display and we would welcome those who would like to know more and who want to get involved in mission themselves.

We have recently received photos of children who require sponsorship in Haiti. You will also see details of other projects which might be of interest.

The Project:
Haiti's capital Port au Prince and the surrounding districts have recently been destroyed by a very powerful earthquake leaving the nation reeling.   As a result there have been many orpahned children adding to the many there before due to previous tropical storms and the like. Mission International's partners in Haiti, led by pastor Rolex Poisson, is working hard amongst the kind of children we want to help and has requested Mission International to assist with sponsorship and projects in order to help them.

Can you help?
Haiti needs help across the baord.   Mission International is not an aid agency and so cannot intervene in the rescue and clean-up after the earthquake, however we have a role to play in the support of the poor.   With your help we can make sure that children who are in need are given the kind of care and support that will allow them to grow up feeling loved and cared for.

Good News from Haiti!
Today (Sunday 17th January 2010) we heard news that Pastor Rolex in Haiti is fine and well. We are now in communication with him to discuss what we can do to help in the process of rebuilding his precious country. Mission International will be gathering support to help support orphaned children, put in place income generating projects for affected families and to take steps to support those who are in need in all sorts of ways.

Please help us help them!
If you can help in any way it will be so much appreciated by those who are in great need. The big disaster relief organisations will do their work of dealing with the aftermath of the earthquake but Mission International has also a role to play in the longer term helping in the rebuilding process. If you can financially support this effort in any way at all please send your support to us using the options on the right hand column of this page.

Mission International is waiting to hear from Pastor Rolex in Haiti to find out the situation in his community there. We will post a message here to inform you of any steps we are likely to take to help those affected by the recent earthquake there in order that you can respond appropriately.
If you would like to give to the Haiti earthquake appeal then Mission International will transfer funds there as soon as possible to help where it is most needed. Christmas BIG Meal in Narok Kenya

The Maasai Mara welcomes Christmas in a new way!

Around 300 children and 100 adults enjoyed a splendid day of celebration together in Narok Town in Kenya's Maasai Mara. Mission International's BIG Meal was delivered to the hungry kids and some parents and guardians as well as visitors by our partners in Kenya People for Jesus Ministries during Christmas Day 2009. Everyone joined in with stories and party pieces as well as eating their fill of lovely Kenyan food.

The Hope Centre kids had a very special Christmas this year. The sponsors from the UK donated a pot of money which was to provide a Christmas party for the children in the centre. Pastor Leonard however saw that many children in the surrounding homes are so poor that they were going to miss out on Christmas while the Hope Centre kids were having a party. It was agreed that an invitation would be extended to some of the poorest children to come along to the Hope Centre Christmas party, in the end 114 children attended in total, 72 village children came along and of course the Hope Centre kids too. Everyone had a wonderful day, a very special Christmas Day indeed.

'Movember'?
The Month of 'Movember' has been added to the fund-raising calendar, well, at least for 2009 since in Movember 2009 a charity fund-raiser was organised by friends of David Henderson to raise some support for the work of Mission International, the group of lads (for obvious reasons) grew facial hair below their noses in keeping with the international fund-raising events (see the following link) http://uk.movember.com/. In all the group raised £75 which will be used to support the poor in the developing world.

The message of Christmas:
The work that Mission International carries out amongst the world's poorest people in never so much brought into focus than it is at this time of year. The Christmas message, of a wonderful Saviour who came to earth to reconcile mankind to God and who called men to follow him in serving the world, is still fully true today. The support we receive from generous hearted people around the country is welcome here in Mission International's office but so much more welcome to those who receive support in terms of a project, or just a meal on Christmas Day. The Port Seton Ambassadors for the Poor Christmas Fayre is fast becoming an annual event. A large number of folks turned up on the day to enjoy some Christmas shopping. Stovies, soup and the ubiquitous tea and coffee were also there helping the consumption of a mountain of home made cakes and other tasty bites.

Peace on earth?

At a time when we celebrate 'Peace On Earth' it is wonderful to see peace in action. The photo shows one of the Hope Centre kids at peace, sleeping on her bed. These children are learning what peace is all about. Burundi has been at war for about 14 years and has recently signed a peace agreement. Lets hope the peace agreement lives up to the kind of peace expected by the children at the Hope Centre and so many more.

Sewing Machines - Burundi

Funds raised by Mission International donors has made possible a grant to provide sewing machines for needy families in Burundi. The machines will be used to make clothing in areas of the country where families are returning from refugee camps in Tanzania and DR Congo. The people who have benefitted from these grants are now able to develop their own income generating tailoring project which will allow them to feed their families and raise income to send their children to school as well as make it possible to develop the project for the future.

Can your church/group help?

Mission International receives requests from churches and ministries in the developing world on a regular, almost daily basis, some known to us and some we would like to link up with in the future. These requests vary from support to build a church or a school, begin a water project or support with evangelism teams. Unfortunately we do not currently have the resources in terms of finance or personnel to help in every situation, however it may be that your church or group would like to link up with a needy community in the developing world in order to help them in a short, medium or long-term basis.

'Hands On' approach:

Churches and community groups, including schools and colleges are able to raise considerable support for charitable purposes however they may not then be able to carry this through to a satisfactory conclusion. You may feel that you would like to be much more 'hands on' with your fundraising and giving, wishing to see the results of what you have achieved in terms of bricks and mortar or lives changed. If this is the case Mission International can link you up to a specific project, one which is in great need but to date has not managed to find an appropriate sponsor to help them. Your church or group would then take on the responsibility of raising the funds, providing some personnel and getting closely involved in the project. This kind of scheme can provide useful links in terms of experience, ministry and global citizenship for many UK groups.

Water for Nyembuye?

Christian Engineers in Development survey Nyembuye hillside:

Christian Engineers in Development have recently carried out a detailed report on the water situation in and around Nyembuye a rural village near Rutana in Burundi. Mission International partners Rema Ministries have constructed a very strategic medical centre in the village which services the wider region. Currently the water supply is unable to cope with the needs of the centre and of the local community, however CED's report suggests that when the water supply is captured along with rainwater then this will majorly change the situation for the better. The Hope Centre in Burundi is now seeing the results of a planned seed planting project from earlier in the year. The unused areas of ground within the compound were laid aside to produce seedlings of cabbages, onions and marrows and now the crops are being harvested.

Seems like this message could be the central theme over the next couple of months. The media managers from shopping outlets in the high street and on-line will want to tell us what it is that they have that we need to have and how inexpensively we can have it.

Our western society has become bogged down in the kind of materialism that developing world families can only dream about. Just recently whilst in Burundi with a mission team we came across a woman with impacted wisdom teeth. It was clear that she would need specialist surgery and so we took her from her rural village to a good hospital in the capital city. While we waited for the surgeon we spent just a couple of hours at the shores of Lake Tanganyika. This woman was so overwhelmed by her visit, she drank some Coca Cola and enjoyed the cool breeze and watched the people as they swam in the water. She thought that she had "reached heaven already".

This Christmas maybe together we can bring some smiles to many more of the faces of those whose lives are a constant grind to survive. Even a small donation of £10 can allow Mission International to bring joy to a family at Christmas time.

Mission International's Mighty Meals project seeks to find a meal a day for needy kids whilst they are at school. The opportunity to have an education is often missed if potential pupils are not able to find a meal each day. The Mighty Meals project makes sure that a child who cannot afford a meal is provided with food each day whilst they are at school, this costs only £25/year. The BIG Meal provides a special meal on Christmas Day for needy kids in the developing world. Supermarket hosts Mission International Fundraisers:

A team of hardworking fundraisers have been given the opportunity to help customers packing their shopping bags at a local Somerfield store. Some members of the team have already visited Burundi and were so affected by the poverty they saw that they now want to try to make a difference there.

The picture shows some of the bag packers hard at work. Customers have been very generous and the team are raising worthwhile support for the work of Mission International.

Theology students receive encouragement:
After carrying a consignment of Bible Handbooks to Burundi on a recent mission trip, team members donated the books to the Anglican Bible College students in Matana. The books were given to Mission International by Signpost International after they were found to be surplus to their requirements. The books are a very valuable resource to students who will emerge as ministers in the Anglican church and will help them to provide a service to the church in Burundi.

Mission International, over recent years has provided Bibles for needy church pastors and leaders and is keen to develop this side of the ministry in areas where the written word is scarce.

Holiday Bible Club raises funds for Hope Centre Burundi!

Members of a Westhill church in Aberdeenshire have raised a total of £102 for the Hope Centre as a result of running a cafe with the club. This is a real encouragement to all of us and show initiative as the group used the opportunity to share what they have with the poor, what better idea for a Bible Club?The hard workers stop for a photo as they use their time skills and initiative to be a blessing to those who are in difficult circumstances.Cafe patrons enjoy the experience in the full knowledge that their support will in turn make a difference in the developing world. Rema Ministries serves the Burundian people:
Rema Ministries, a local Burundian NGO is continually working to serve the people of Burundi, their work involved the support of those returning refugees currently being repatriated to Burundi after years of exile due to war, in neighbouring countries like DR Congo and Tanzania.

One of the team, Micheline, is seen here delivering an old Singer sewing machine, which arrived in Burundi in a container a few months ago, to a group of ladies who will use it to develop an income generating project supporting those with HIV/AIDS.

Young Mission Team members make a difference by their commitment:

The three Girls sort through bag loads of gifts carried for the children of the Hope centre and others.

Three of the latest Burundi team, now returned from their trip, have made substantial contributions to the support of the Hope Centre project and to the children supported there. Alison, Amy and Rheagan, three school girls who were part of the team, had raised a considerable amount of support before heading out on the trip to Africa. The three used the funds they had raised in some really significant ways. Firstly they were able to sponsor three of the Hope Centre kids for a year, then they started a goat project by funding the purchase of the first three goats as well as leaving funds to purchase cement for the continuation of the building programme.

Here the girls get involved in team activities presenting stories songs and dramas to the children, ably assisted by their Kirundi translator Berry.

Hope Centre - Sustainability!

Hope Centre starts a new project:
Pastor Leonard Tuyishimire has, in a quest to make the Hope Centre more sustainable, begun a small garden project. The photos below show seeds being sown and protected from the sun.

Young seedlings are protected by a grass covered shade to protect them, once they become established the shade will be removed and when the seedlings are strong enough they will be planted out and in turn will provide food for the family and a source of income as well.

Manchester United's Christiano Ronaldo has just been sold to Real Madrid for a record £80 Million pounds. To try to get a handle on that the media in the UK have been asking what would that buy? How many David Beckhams and so on. I did a quick rekki to discover that £80 Million pounds would sponsor 33,333 children for 10 years at £20/month.

Many Millions of children and adults will die this year due to hunger, disease and as a result of dirty/diseased water. In this time of financial crisis it is an insult to poor families around the world to see a young sportsman like Ronaldo being exchanged such a colossal amount of money, a percentage of which he will 'earn' himself of course for playing football each week.

How do we respond to the model Jesus left for us?
Someone once said "...many Christians do as Jesus did and many Christians say what Jesus said but what we need are Christians who both say what Jesus said and do what Jesus did...". We need the complete package if we are to fulfil the mandate that Jesus left for us.

The book of James in the Bible is much maligned as one which seems to divert from the Reformed Evangelical track of Sola Scriptura (by scripture alone), Sola Fide (by faith alone), and Sola Gratia (by Grace alone) etc. I am however sensing that the Church in the western world needs to get back into its stride, take a more balanced view and both say and do. There is no need whatsoever for us however to throw the baby out with the theological bathwater and sideline the Solas but to add to our repertoire the practical application of our faith.

Mission International's purpose is to endeavour to both say and do. Our teams travel to various parts of the world to share the Good News about Jesus as He commanded us to do, and we also partner with local NGOs to implement projects which will support the poor as Jesus called us to do.

King is Queen of the track!
Grandmother, Janet King a hairdresser from Port Seton completed the Edinburgh marathon in 5hrs 15 mins. Her run was in support of the Hope Centre in Burundi. Janet (Left in the picture below) seen here with her colleague came to visit the teams training day to introduce herself. It was really good to meet her and to hear of her efforts in fundraising, a final total thought to be in the region of £1000 will be posted here soon.

Janet's run took place on one of the hottest days of the year (31st May 2009) and so it is a great achievement for her to complete the whole course in such a fantastic time. We all want to say a huge thank you to Janet and to everyone who contributed to her sponsorship - Well done!

Hope Centre Kids see their new home for the first time:

Time for transformation:
The children of the Hope Centre in Burundi have been shown round house one for the first time. The house will be copied almost identically another five times to provide homes for all of the children. The transformation for them will be huge, coming from the insecurity of poorly apportioned rented accommodation to a home in which they will grow up securely and comfortably will for them be like a dream come true.
We are all so grateful to Charles & Val Carr for their hard work and of course to the Burundian team who have grafted tirelessly to get the centre to this stage. There is of course some way to go before the centre is complete but this is an exciting stage to reach.

Hope Centre houses near completion:

Houses one, two and three are almost there!

Charles and Val Carr and their family, who have spent the last 10 months in Burundi managing the Hope Centre building project will be returning to the UK at the end of May. During their time in Burundi they have managed to build three of the six homes which comprise the Hope Centre in Mutimbuzi, Gatumba, Burundi. Charles and Val have managed to squeeze in a short holiday to Uganda and will now finalise their time in Burundi before making their way back to the UK. Their efforts have been nothing short of remarkable. They have left their home, their friends and their jobs/schools and have travelled to a foreign country, climate and culture and have worked incredibly hard to set up and establish a very worthwhile project and at the same time have kept us all informed of progress and have been involved closely in the fundraising process as well.

At the rear of the homes there is a small porch attached.

The front of the homes shows how beautifully they appear and reveals the extent of the detail and high level of workmanship put into the whole project so far.

Pakistani Christians pray for their nation:

Many are in fear after attacks on Christians:
Many Christians don't know what the future holds for them as they try to make some sense of the savage attacks that have taken place on their communities throughout Pakistan by Muslim extremists. They are being hunted and killed for the simple reason that they belong to Jesus.

Many Christian communities have been left homeless having had their homes and churches razed to the ground and their young men and women raped and killed.

Pakistan - Christians being killed!

News from Pakistan!

News recently received by Mission International from contacts in Pakistan relate stories of Muslims meeting out cruel abuses on Christians and churches in the Punjab region. Under reporting by local press agencies and the fact that Government agencies have largely ignored the plight of the Christians and the crimes of those carrying out the abuses is further evidence that Pakistan is in a crisis.

The recent reports received claim that churches have been burned down and many Christians have been killed, in particular young men, although some reports detail rape and murder of young women.

Mission International intends to send financial support to Pakistan to help purchase basics like food, clothing and shelter for those whose homes and churches have been sacked. Rema Ministries supports returning refugees:

Mission International partners help needy returnees:

Rema Ministries, an indigenous Burundian Christian ministry was able to distribute clothes and food to refugee returnees as they arrive back in Burundi from camps in Tanzania. Mission International sent out over £1000 of support raised by East Linton Primary School in East Lothian in Scotland, funds raised by the children their parents and families and friends of the school.

Your old mobile can change someone's life in the developing world:

Most people nowadays have at least one old mobile phone lurking in a drawer somewhere in their house. Old phones are now worth very little here in the UK but in the developing world a mobile phone can mean a small business in a rural community thus an income meaning a lifeline to the owner. Furthermore many very rural communities have no permanent means of communication and so a mobile phone can be for some the difference between life and death.

Parental Care Ministries Easter Celebration:
Pastor Emmanuel Nnyanzi and his church in Mbarara, Uganda held a special Easter celebration for the church congregation and for the Children of Parental Care School during the Easter period, her you can see the kids lining up for a special Easter meal. No Easter eggs or bunnies here but lots and lots of Matooke, the staple of Ugandans.

Refugee returnees need church buildings!

Refugees returning to Burundi after many years in exile are facing many great difficulties. The lack of food and shelter amongst the most pressing. Christians however face a further problem, that of finding the means to build a place of worship.

Many Christians meet in the open air, under a tree or in the case shown here under a piece of tattered tarpaulin.

Happy smiling faces on the church leaders in this picture when they receive a new Bible from the Bible-A-Month Club. Mission International Display Stand:

Like many other local and national ministries, Mission International took the opportunity to erect a display for those who came to the Resurrection Day celebration in the Caird Hall in Dundee to browse before and after the main event. Friends old and new came by to have a look and many took materials home with them to look at later. A number of people expressed interest in mission teams and others in supporting the work of Mission International financially.

Since this was the first large event the Mission International has attended we are delighted that so many visited us on the day.

Finishing begins on house one:

The bulk of the work is now done on house one:

The Hope Centre Burundi plans to have six houses on the site. The foundations have been laid for all six but funds are in place for only four of the six. Charles and Val Carr will be returning to the UK in May and so it is hoped that up to four homes will be completed by that time. The remaining two will be finished when funds are located for them.

Here a plumber fits the first of the shower bases in house one, this will be inhabited by Pastor Leonard and his immediate family.

The cement floors need to be finished with a coat which is shined up and smoother off in order that it can receive a few coats of floor paint.

The reinforced concrete frame for the hose is given a finishing coat of cement to smooth it off and to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

Here Pastor Leonard helps construct some of the roof trusses which will eventually end up on one of the homes.

The Hope Centre - roof number 1:

The Hope Centre in Burundi saw a wonderful landmark event taking place this week. The first house received its roof. There is still a way to go to finish the first house and of course even more of a way until the whole project is complete but we are all very thankful for the team of planners and workers in Burundi who have reached this far in such a short time. Mission International is raising the funds to build a maternity unit:

The urgent need for this vital maternity unit in Nyembuye has prompted Mission International to raise its profile once again. The complete unit is expected to cost around £80,000 to build and so a focused approach is necessary if we are to succeed on behalf of the very needy refugees who are returning to populate this rural area of Burundi.

Refugees begin to build simple homes for their families, but should a woman develop any complications during childbirth she has to be stretchered for 2 days to the nearest maternity centre. Many women and their babies die en-route.

Refugee Homes for £8000

Refugees return home after years in refugee camps:

Many Burundians have spent years in refugee camps in the neighbouring countries to Burundi due to civil strife at home over the last 14 years or so. Now that their return home has been prompted by the end of the war in Burundi and by the closing of the camps, by the governments of Tanzania, DR Congo etc, where they have stayed for many years they have no option but to return home. As you can imagine 900,000 repatriates arriving at the same time would be difficult for any country but for Burundi, the poorest country in the world, it is a huge problem. The returnees make up about 10% of the current population and this is further exacerbated by the fact that Burundi is a very small country in terms of available land (about the size of Wales in the UK).

The border crossing can be a welcome sight for those returning to their homeland, however this is often when their problems begin. How to find a place to live, will they be able to regain their family land? What about medical care and schooling for their children?

Once the refugees find their way back to Burundi they are facesd with the difficult prospect of starting again from scratch. They return with what they can carry on theuir head and begin to rebuild their already shattered lives. This mother and her child, from Nyembuye near Rutana, faces a long hard road not only for survival but to build a future for herself and her family.

Building work going on in Mutimbuzi, Gatumba, Burundi, near the capital city Bujumbura where six homes for orphaned children are currently being built, the refugee homes would be built following similar plans. These homes are built from compressed blocks thus saving on the huge amounts of timber to make the traditional 'fired' bricks.

How can we help?
Mission International, with your help, can make a difference to these families returning to Burundi. One major issue for families who come back to their homeland after a period of war is where to stay? Mission International is partnering with REMA Ministries, an indigenous refugee support agency in Burundi, to build basic homes for refugees who are coming back into the country. The cost of each small home will be £8000. The homes will be built in such a way that they can be extended once the family manages to get on their feet.

Roof trusses being prepared for the roofs of the small homes, these will be fitted with iron sheets or clay/cement tiles to form a strong roof.

International financial crisis hits Hope Centre:

Due to current money exchange rates the Hope Centre has hit a financial shortfall. When we started the building work the exchange rate was 2230 Burundi Francs to the pound, however the falling currency markets, in particular the pound means that now the rate stands at 1772 Burundi francs to the pound. This added to the rising cost of materials like cement means that the overall cost of completing the centre has risen considerably. We hope to find funds for this (your help would be appreciated) but if we don't then work may have to stop at the end of February until the funds are raised.

President put the 'icing on the Christmas cake' in Burundi:
The president of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza made an impromptu visit to the Hope Centre site on the 27th December 2008, the photos below show his cavalcade arriving and him being shown around the site by Pastor Leonard Tuyishimire.

In the mean time work continues, window and door frames are fabricated and fitted and the walls are raised to a new level.

Below the Hope Centre kids enjoy their Christmas day meal as well as have some gifts presented to them.
